In these "small hours" before the morning comes, I feel the surge of death. Like a distant roar of the sea, the surge of death sets my body to trembling. Things like this happen often when I am writing a full-length novel. By writing it, I descend little by little into the depths of life. One step at a time, I go down my little ladder. But the closer I draw to the centre of life, the more clearly I can feel it: just the tiniest half-step beyond in the darkness, death too is displaying its own simultaneous surge. P.166

Murakami has claimed several times that he never dreams. In conversation with the Jungian psychologist Hayao Kawai, however, he revealed that he does have one recurring dream in which he sees himself levitating. It is wonderful feeling, he said, and just as wonderful is the sense of confidence he has in the dream that he knows exactly how to do it. Kawai interpreted this as a symbol of Murakami's confidence as a storyteller. P.179
