Boku's "purification" in Hokkaido was partly autobiographical. As he neared the end of "A Wild Sheep Chase", Murakami gave up smoking (cold turkey: from three packs a day to nothing) and took up running in earnest. As he burrowed deeper inside himself for material, he felt the need for some kind of physical discipline to keep on an even keel. P.95

In 1987, the Murakamis went so far as to have an extra-large bed built into their new home in anticipation of the 6'2" Carver's arrival in Japan, at the invitation of the Chuo Koron Company publishers. The bed frame was constructed by a furniture maker, and the futon mattress (5'×7') was made by the shop that Yoko's late father had owned. By then, however, Carver's cancer made such a trip impossible. Surgery on 1 October involved the removal of three-quarters of a lung, and the following year he died. P.100
