They moved out of Tokyo to suburban Funabashi and underwent a complete change of lifestyle. Instead of working at the club until two or three in the morning, Haruki was in bed by ten and up by six, writing. He started listening to more classical music and growing vegetables in the garden with Yoko. P.74

Impressed by a novel called "Coin Locker Babies" by Ryu Murakami (no relation),Murakami knew that he wanted to write something equally sustained, unlike the fragmentary two books that had brought him such attention. It was the sheer energy of "Coin Locker babies" that encouraged him to think more in terms of storytelling than montage to provide narrative momentum and wholeness. P.78
